We still have a couple more months of winter left, and Old Man Winter doesn’t mess around when it comes to winter HVAC emergencies. So, don’t let him catch you off guard. But, of course, it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan ready in case you’re snowed in, your furnace goes out, or the power goes out altogether. But don’t worry, Circleville Heating & Cooling has got you covered with these tips to guide you and keep you warm no matter what winter throws your way.

WHAT ARE SOME GOOD BACKUP IDEAS FOR WINTER HVAC EMERGENCIES?

First things first – before you wait for a major snowstorm to occur, be proactive now by investing in a backup generator. Another great option is to consider investing in some portable heaters (just be sure to use them safely, according to the manufacturer’s instructions). Fortunately, a wide variety of options are available on the market in all price ranges. Furthermore, stockpiling some emergency firewood and fire starters for your fireplace is never a bad idea if you own one. You could also keep some extra blankets tucked away for easy access. And don’t forget to close all your blinds and window coverings. It’ll help insulate your home and keep that warm air inside.

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS TO MAXIMIZE THE HEAT IN YOUR HOME?

Even if the power doesn’t go out, you can still maximize the heat in your home by making sure all your indoor vents are open and unobstructed. Move any furniture or other objects that might be blocking them. In addition, you should close your blinds and window coverings for an extra layer of insulation.

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS YOU SHOULD KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR, FOR WHEN IT SNOWS?

  • Your Outdoor Vents: Don’t forget about your outdoor vents. Clear them of any snow and ice with a brush or broom to assist in keeping your HVAC system running smoothly.
  • Your Heat Pump: During harsh weather, check it occasionally to make sure no snow or ice has accumulated on top of your heat pump. If buildup has occurred, brush it off gently with a brush or broom.
  • Your Gas Meter: While you’re out checking your exterior vents and heat pump, check your gas meter too. Clear away any snow or ice with a brush or broom. Just be gentle and avoid using heavy objects that could damage the meter (I.e., shovels and snowblowers). If you notice any issues with your gas meter, shut off the gas supply and call a service professional.
