Located halfway between Columbus and Cincinnati, Greenfield is well known for its new industries and rich history. The village also played an essential role in the Underground Railroad. Greenfield is located in Ross and Highland counties in Ohio, and a great deal of its early history is centered around the Travellers’ Rest Inn at the eastern end of Jefferson Street, which is now a national historic site. Constructed in 1812, the Inn was the village’s first stone building. It also served as Greenfield’s first post office, and was the space for its first doctor’s office. In 1799, Gen. Duncan McArthur founded the town. Throughout its history, Greenfield has had many innovators, like Edward Lee McClain who was well known for his detachable horse collar.
